Read up on these essential habits.
Be nice to your toothbrush. Each time after you use it, rinse the bristles well to free them of leftover particles of food and toothpaste residue. Keep it in an upright position where there’s good airflow. Don’t encase the bristles in one of those square plastic protectors. Bacteria love moist environments. Get a new toothbrush every three to four months or when the bristles start to bend or fray—whichever comes first. And do all of the above for your kids’ toothbrushes.
Clean your tongue. If you take a close look at it, you’ll see that its surface is full of creases and tiny crevices, which are perfect hiding places for food residue and bacteria. Use a tongue scraper or a toothbrush with a tongue cleaner on the opposite side of the bristles. This practice will improve your oral health and reduce your chances of developing bad breath.
Watch what you drink. Diet and non-diet sodas and sports drinks are full of acids that can corrode enamel and irritate gums. The natural and artificial sugar in juices can easily cling to teeth and lead to cavities. Cut down on soda and acidic juices; concentrate on water and milk.
Don’t use tobacco products. Yes, cigarettes stain and weaken teeth, but chewing tobacco is a huge cause of oral cancer and tissue damage.
Watch what you eat. Focus on foods and beverages that have calcium, vitamins A and C, and antioxidant staples such as raw veggies, fruit, cheese and yogurt.
Remember that once a permanent tooth is gone, it’s gone! Sure, you can get dentures or implants, but natural teeth are always better. Always!
