Dry mouth may be most commonly associated with feelings of anxiety, but it can also be a symptom of other health issues. The inadequate production of saliva — also known as xerostomia — can have a profound effect on our oral health. The dentists at the offices of Doctors Kohn, Kollander, Eisenberger and Galler check for symptoms of xerostomia as part of our comprehensive regular examination, explain the possible consequences of the problem, and work with our patients to restore this vital fluid.

We may take our saliva for granted, but how many of us understand its importance as our mouth’s primary line of defense in guarding against tooth decay? Besides washing food and other substances away, our saliva neutralizes acids produced by bacteria, all the while doing double duty protecting our bodies against disease-spreading germs. It moistens food to enhance our ability to taste, and make it easier to swallow; and strengthens our teeth by rinsing them with protective calcium and fluoride.

Dry mouth can be at the root of a number of common maladies, including trouble swallowing or speaking, hoarseness or dry nasal passages, persistent sore throat, and a burning sensation. It may occur as a side effect of medications such as decongestants, painkillers, antihistamines, diuretics and many others. It also may present itself as a symptom of a medical disorder, such as Sjogren’s syndrome, an autoimmune disease in which the patient’s immune system attacks its own moisture producing glands.

If you feel you may have the signs of dry mouth, the dentists at the offices of Doctors Kohn, Kollander, Eisenberger and Galler recommend taking a proactive approach. Our friendly, attentive staff offer award-winning treatment in our modern, comfortable facility. Our goal is to protect your complete oral health — and your beautiful smile — for many years to come.
